News Events
This week marked the official launch of the third edition of the “Venture Catalysts” - a training program designed to support the development of science-based entrepreneurship. Nearly 80 researchers, entrepreneurs, and deep tech enthusiasts have applied for the intensive five-week journey focused on commercialization, startup development, and leadership growth.

On the first day of the program, participants engaged in networking activities and attended the opening thematic session: “Innovation and Commercialization as Key Drivers of Entrepreneurship.” The session featured experts Andris Baumanis (UniLab), Ella Kalniņa (UniLab), and Agnese Oļševska (LIAA), who discussed core aspects of building science-intensive businesses - from strategic approaches to commercialization to a broader understanding of the innovation ecosystem in Latvia and beyond.

“Latvia is home to many talented researchers and inventors whose full potential is yet to be unlocked. With the support of the ‘Venture Catalysts’ program, we provide them with the opportunity to take the next step - transforming their ideas into real commercial projects. This program empowers them and equips them with the knowledge needed to turn scientific ideas into drivers of our economic growth,” comments Agnese Oļševska, Deputy Director of the LIAA Export and Innovation Support Department.

The program is organized by UniLab in collaboration with Riga Business School at RTU, RISEBA, and LIAA, and is co-financed by the European Union. Venture Catalysts aims to provide practical tools for the commercialization of research-driven innovations. Ten expert-led workshops cover topics such as startup growth strategy, leadership, attracting investors, and intellectual property protection, helping participants gain the skills and confidence needed to launch successful deep tech ventures.

“Venture Catalysts is where I get to share my passion for deep tech, entrepreneurship, and creating real impact. I’m here to support researchers and entrepreneurs who want to connect science and business and build ventures that truly make a difference,” shares Ella Kalniņa, Venture Catalysts lecturer.

In addition to the workshops, participants benefit from mentorship, practical insights from seasoned entrepreneurs, and access to a co-founder database featuring professionals with commercial or scientific backgrounds. The program runs through August 28, creating a community ready to shape the future of innovation in Latvia.
